What is Consciousness?

What is consciousness.

It’s not physical. Physics is the algorithmic relationship between matter and energy i.e. the materialistic structure of our existence. Consciousness is not a thing that can be measured or quantified. It is a private understanding of our essence that cannot be duplicated.

Consciousness is the awareness of our existence, our subjective feeling about it and our purpose for being. It is the cause of our free will that allows us to predict our future and decide how to affect it.

It is reasonable to believe that existence was caused by an inherent need for consciousness. Philosophically, theologians are not wrong to assert that consciousness was of the creation.   Consciousness is the essential component for the perpetuation of existence and its purpose. Physics and the cosmological forces that define it are fine tuned and in perfect balance to support and refine consciousness, so, consciousness must be the purpose. Without our individual subjective consciousnesses there would not be existence, because there would be no means or purpose for perpetuating it.

Even if you believe that existence was caused by an accidental disturbance in the ether that slowly evolved over billions of years, you must admit that there was purpose in a mutually supportive process of survival and the continued refinement of consciousness. We could argue about whether consciousness was there at the beginning or gradually came into being. The original creation or inflation (whichever you ascribe to), allowed our consciousness to develop. It is not debatable. It obviously did.

That there are differing levels of consciousness is also consistent with the progression of creation through time. The planets and stars survived first in a symbiotic relationship that is supported by the same cosmic laws that we live with today. The waters began teeming with life that found purpose in survival and procreation. The birds of the sky and the animals of the land developed an instinct for adaptation to different environments and colonization that found strength and harmony in communities of likeness. Finally, man found place at the highest level of consciousness with the ability to reason, plan and feel; with a free will that allowed a creative and inventive development. That consciousness survived and developed to a state of being aware of and curious about existence is proof enough of the purpose of the universe. If after all this time we are still asking why, then our journey in consciousness is ongoing.

Did consciousness come first? If consciousness is the awareness of being, at all levels of existence and the inherent instinct and adaptability to survive and thrive, then whether consciousness was the cause or the effect of creation, it had to be present at the beginning even if it was only a rudimentary foundation to allow it to develop. The real question is one of intent. Was there a conscious decision and plan to our existence?

Physics may not be consciousness, but the mere fact that we use our consciousness to unwind the mystery of our physical world provides purpose and hope for an even greater awareness of our reality. If existence is self-aware at a fundamental level, then our existence is a singular conscious entity. The subjectivity in our own consciousness allows us to have a personal feeling about our awareness of existence that shades our ability to predict our future. But for existence to remain in balance and in harmony, it seems likely that there can only be one objective consciousness that transcends feeling or supposition; an omniscient consciousness. We can call this God.
